Description

Category: Sigil (S)

Music I listened to while drawing Zeraphine "Out of the void"
Goal To try something new. To draw something without having to improve it much digitally. To create the most complicated sigil I have ever seen using only fineliners, rulers and my hands and add a three dimensional effect to the outcome. To draw something that viewed every time could be interpreted in a different way. To draw something that would make me think of being inside of a batiscaph. To test my concentration and my ability to make a sigil look symethric using only my hands, rulers and compasses (that's right! No mirror-reflecting filters have been used!). To try known filters in a completely new situation (contains filters like diffuse glow, smart blur and contrast/brightness adjustments and changed colour balance).
Additional goals achieved This was also the first time when the three dimensional filter didn't look stupid when added to the drawing. And it worked so nicely with the change colour balance filter. I seem to be falling in love with the rusty colour.
Technique I drew the lineart using Stabilo fineliners. I used compasses to draw the circle and mark the measurments and I used a ruler to draw straight frames and lines. I began with a circle, then splited it diagonally, horizontally, vertically, the split the new shapes once again and the new ones too. I drew a line with a pencil first on on side and then on the other to make sure I don't get lost in this maze of geometric shapes. After finishing the drawing with a pencil I covered the lines I liked using fineliners and I erased the lines I didn't like (that didn't create interesting geometric shapes). I pressed the fineliner quite hard to make sure that the lines are smooth and without blank spots. I scanned it (300dpi) and worked on it in Paintshop 9. I used the smart blur filter to make it look smoother, I made the image darker for better lineart. I used the diffuse glow filter for the background light and then I played with the colour balance to apply a rust colour scheme. I also added the geometric shape that made it look like a sphere.
Story I always dreamt of treasure hunting and drying the seas so one could visit the wrecked ships. I also dreamt of being able to swim without having to breathe.
Next experiment I might apply the filter on a drawing that contains faces. The glass would distort their faces, but they would look as if they were in a batiscaph crowded just like japanes subway trains.
Time spent on this About 15 hours.
Inspiration for the title The sphere looked like a batiscaph. Or at least the cockpit of the Highwind in Final Fantasy VII.
Dedicated to the everyday heroes that aren't with us anymore: soldiers, firemen, journalists, protestants. Everyone who was stopped in making this world a better place.

Thanks for viewing, my Friends.
